Needy Students | Grade 9 | SCH
“After my father passed away, my mother gave us love, care, and protection to us facing countless hurdles and hardships.” –Dorje Sherpa
Introduction of the student
Dorje Sherpa is a 19-year-old student. He lives in SCH but he is originally from Timbathang village of Sidhupalchok district, Nepal.
Currently, there are three members in his family. His 65 years old mother, 25 years old elder brother, and himself. The rest of his brothers and sisters are married and living separately.
Dorje Sherpa’s father passed away when he was a child then his mother raised him and his brother from a very young age. She struggled a lot to grow her children alone. Now, she is becoming older and lonely in the village. Therefore, Dorje’s elder brother is taking care of her. Besides Dorje, his brothers and sisters did not get any opportunity for school education.
Collecting herbals in mountains is the only cash income for my family. When I was 12, I and my mother went to the high mountain for collecting Yerchcha Gunbu (colloquially known as caterpillar fungus). Suddenly there was an earthquake and I was even hit by an avalanche. Luckily I could survive hiding under the cave for days. When we reached the village there was nothing left for living in. It was also very dangerous for living there due to the landslides caused by the constant aftershocks. So, I came to Kathmandu together with my family members looking for a safe place. After months of staying under the makeshift zinc shelter in Kathmandu, fortunately, he was taken to SCH.
When I arrived at SCH I didn’t know anything. Karma DM the in charge of SCH helped me leaning the alphabet and write my name. Then I was sent to a nearby school and learned many new things. I even couldn’t speak the Nepalese language with my school teachers and classmates. So, I had to depend upon my native Sherpa language for a year. I am so lucky that I could study in Kathmandu. If I did not get the support I would not get the education. So, I am very much thankful to my sponsors.
Once he was gravely infected by pneumonia while he staying in SCH. He was hospitalized for 15 days and went through an operation. The Dr. took out a Liter of pus from his lung. It took him more than a month to be fit and fine again.
Dorje is a diligent and active boy. He has a very charming personality and is friendly to his friends. He also joined SCH social workers to do service work in his village. He thanks all the sponsors for kindly taking care of him until now. He wants to study harder to make his life better by taking care of his beloved mother. Best wishes to him!”
Thank you.
