Lhamu Sherpa

Needy Students | Grade 2 | SCH

Lhamu Sherpa is an 11-year-old student. She lives in SCH, Kathmandu but she originally comes from the Tembathang village situated in a remote area of northern Nepal. Lhamu has three elder brothers. Two of them studied in Tembathang basic school and one went to join a monastery in India. She has got both parents but their economic condition is very poor. Her father works as a yak farmer in the mountain and her mother cultivate crops in the village.

The difficulty of living the life in mountains.

The Nepal earthquake destroyed their small home in the Tempathang village but now they could rebuild it with the help of an NGO. The livelihood in the remote Himalayas is very difficult. Although they work for a whole year there is not enough food for the family.

Gender discrimination in the family

The family sent three sons to school but they didn’t send Lhamu to school. She was kept in the mountain with them on the yak farm. Later she was brought to SCH by the social workers during the field visit to Tembathang in 2022. Educating daughters is still not prioritized in Tembathang village.

Lhamu’s journey from the remote mountain to Kathmandu

The father of Lhamu Sherpa requested the social workers of SCH to support at least one of his children in SCH. Actually, the family wanted to send one of three sons to SCH. The team of SCH got to know that they also have a daughter and she has not been going to school for a long time. Then the team of SCH asked the family to send a daughter instead of a son.  After convincing them that both son and daughter are the same for the family and society they agreed to send Lhamu instead of her brothers.

Lhamu’s school life

She is very lucky that now she is in SCH and studying very well. Her school name is Holy Angel Public School located in Kathmandu the capital city of Nepal. She didn’t know anything at the beginning. So, the social workers and students of SCH helped her with the basic alphabet and guided her before she joined her school. Now she studies in grade two. She even got outstanding results in her last exam.

Besides school subject, she also likes to dance, sings, and plays with her friends.

She would like to be a great person in the future.
