SCH students | Grade 11 | Tembathang
I am Dawa Dorje Sherpa, and I was born and raised in a rural village. Despite this, I had the good fortune to study in Kathmandu, thanks to the support of Sherpa Children Home and ICEF-Taiwan. During an earthquake, I was rescued from my village and given assistance with my living, education, and accommodation. Currently, I am 19 years old, pursuing my studies in Humanities at Venus College. My family comprises eight members, including my parents, three elder sisters, one elder brother, one younger sister, and myself. While my sisters are all married, my brother and younger sister help my parents in the village. My hobbies include playing football and dancing, but my primary aim is to support my family by improving the condition of our village school.
Living in a village has its benefits and drawbacks. The environment is pure and fresh, and the food is delicious and organic. Life in the village offers opportunities to engage in physical activities, learn about animal farming and agriculture, and participate in community events. However, the village’s isolation from the city and the world can be challenging. Due to the lack of electricity and internet connectivity, there is no access to news or updates. The absence of proper roads means that any goods or items must be transported by hand over a risky path for four hours. This can be perilous due to the threat of falling from cliffs or landslides. Additionally, there is a lack of proper health facilities and transportation, which can make any medical emergency expensive and challenging to manage. Despite these difficulties, I am grateful for the support of Sherpa Children Home and ICEF-Taiwan, which has allowed me to pursue my dreams and help my family.
I had the privilege of being a volunteer in my village, Tembathang, and it was an incredibly fulfilling experience. As part of the volunteer staff, I was able to teach students in the TBS school and assist with home visits for many students, compiling reports on their progress. I am proud to have been part of this important work and grateful to ICEF-Taiwan and SCH for giving me the opportunity to serve my community. The chance to give back in this way was truly meaningful, and I hope to continue volunteering in the future.
